Teens Behind-the-Wheel

Teen Driver Education (Ages 14.5 – 17)

Students aged 14.5 to 17 are required to complete the teen driver education course to obtain their driver’s license.

Course Structure:

  1. Classroom Phase: Students start with the classroom phase. On the 4th day of this phase, they will take a written test. Upon passing, they will receive a DE-964 certificate, which is needed to obtain their learner’s permit from the DPS.
  2. Learner’s Permit Submission: Once the learner’s permit is issued, students must submit a copy of it to the driving school office. This can be done by providing a hard copy or uploading a digital copy on our website.
  3. Driving Sessions: Drive times can be scheduled based on the student’s availability. Each driving session lasts 2 hours and can be arranged flexibly. Evening driving sessions are available on school days, and during the summer, both morning and evening sessions are offered.

Student Requirements at the Driving School:

1. Classroom Sessions: Complete 32 hours of classroom instruction (sessions 1 – 16).
2. Permit Written Test:Taken during classroom session #4.
3. DE-964 Permit Certificate: Provided by the driving school.
4. In-Car Instruction: 7 hours of driving and 7 hours of observation.
5. DE-964 Road Test Certificate: Provided by the driving school.

Requirements to Complete with Parents/Legal Guardians:

1. 30 Hours of Driving: Includes 10 hours of night driving. [Link to 30-hour log]
2. Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD): Required as of September 1, 2015. [Link to ITTD]

How to Sign Up for the Class:
  • Submit an Application: Signed by a parent or guardian.
  • Make Payment: Cash, check, or credit card.
How to Obtain Your Learner’s Permit:

As per the new law, all teenagers must visit the DPS Office with their parents to obtain their permit once all required documents are ready.

Documents Required for DPS:

  • Certified Birth Certificate: Foreign birth certificates are not accepted. You must provide a resident alien card, passport with visa, Texas ID, or citizenship documents.
  • Original Social Security Card: Not required for certain non-immigrant statuses.
  • Two Proofs of Texas Residency: Examples include utility bills, bank statements, or credit card statements.
  • Valid V.O.E (Verification of Enrollment): Obtain this from your school office. It is valid for only 30 days from the date of issuance.
  • Forms Provided by Us: DE-964
  • Fees: $16 for individuals under 18, and $26 for those 18 and older. This fee is to be submitted to the DPS Office for permit application.
